Dear Fellow Carers Image

My Father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease 2 years ago. His condition has since rapidly deteriorated to the point where he no longer recognises my Mum, his children or grandchildren. A whole lifetime of memories has been simply wiped out and it has completely devastated the whole family. He used to be an active and independant man, but now he is totally dependant on others to do everything for him. In the beginning I just used to feel so helpless and just cry, it's only recently that I'm coming to terms with it. I miss the Father I used to know and will do everthing I can to help him and thousands of other sufferers like him.

Please help this campaign for drug treatment to help thousands of people with Alzheimer's disease. You may probably know of a family membr, a friend, a neighbour, who has this terrible disease. It affects over 700,000 people in the UK alone.

Over 100,000 people will develop dementia this year; yet NICE has completely ignored the devastating effect that this decision will have not just on these people but their carers too.

The more people who campaign for dementia drugs, the more the NHS and the government will sit up and take notice. The cost is only £2.50 a day for these drugs, which are both clinically and cost effective.

I received this from John Healey today:-

Thank you for your recent email and for outlining your concerns about the NICE recommendation for Alzheimier's only to be prescribed to people in the moderate stages of the disease.

I was sorry to note how the disease has affected your family and as you ask, I have written to the PCT on this issue and I will write to you again when I receive their reply.

Yours sincerely

John Healey MP
Wentworth Constituency

Had this in the post this morning via my MP John Healey, it's from Dr. John Radford, Director of Public Health, Rotherham NHS PCT.

Dear John

Thank you for your letter to Andy Buck (Chief Exec). Andy has asked me to reply on behalf of the PCT.

Following the recent High Court decision to uphold the NICE recommendations on Alzheimers drugs it is the PCT's intentions to implement these in full. We all wish that the anti-cholinesterase inhibiter drugs were effective in treating the cause of Alzheimers disease, the truth is that they are not. Until there is sound clinical evidence to the contrary, the PCT's intention is to follow the definitive NICE guidance.

Now we have guidance we are intending to ensure that Doncaster & South Humbersided Foundation Trust comply with the guidance and that we move towards the use of generic prescribing. Our intention is to make significant investment in a memory clinic in Rotherham to improve the support for people with Alzheimers and other dementias. We believe that significant savings can be made from the often wasteful use of these drugs and that this funding can be reinvested in better support.

I enclose a copy of a recently completed briefing paper (NOT ENCLOSED!) produced by one of our prescribing advisers on use of anti-dementia drugs locally. These indicate that we have higher than average prescribing, there is inequality in access and type of drug use between localities within Rotherham and we will be addressing these issues to free up resources to better serve patients with dementia.

Sorry Pat, not what we wanted to hear Image
