Care Home Insists on Supervised Visits.

Hello everyone,

No idea if this is the right place to put this. My mum has multiple sclerosis, and it has been very hard for her since dad went in to a care home. When we get to the Care Home they insist that they supervise the visit because that's the Government guidelines.

So for the hour mum is there, she has another member of staff watching her and dad, albeit 2 meters away of course. This makes the visit stressful for mum. She has asked for unsupervised visits but they have told her it's not possible and they will refuse her entry to my dad if she doesn't do as she is told.

I realise through talking to some of my own friends that visits are hard to get and maybe I should tell mum just to get on with it. But we're at a point where she starting to feel she can no longer face going to the home and this would be devastating for my dad.

No idea what to do.

As they are married, this may be in breach of their human rights, to a normal family life, as much as possible.

I can't understand why the visits have to be supervised. MyMum’s care home is really hot on safety during the pandemic but they don’t supervise.

I was never supervised when visiting my husband in the nursing home. To be fair they would leave us if they wanted to do any obs saying they would come back, unless deemed necessary at that moment. Maybe contact care quality commission for advice?

I find it frustrating that I have looked for this so called government guideline, that I can't find anywhere on the gov website. And now to be told other homes are not even doing it.

It's such a sad situation, they have been married for 45 years. My mum wears hearing aids so the level at which mum and dad converse would be loud enough for anyone to hear within 5 metres let alone 2. Dad has vascular dementia and had a series of strokes which is why he is there.

A lot of things are being blamed on the Govt but when you look into it it’s nothing to do with them.

A council housing officer told me that they were following Govt rules with regard to social housing. I asked her to point me in the direction of this ruling as I couldn’t find anything about it and she then admitted it was a local decision not a govt. one.

People, businesses and organisations just try it on.
