Response to Work and Pensions Committee's Support for Carers Inquiry

25 January 2018

Carers UK’s submission of written evidence to the Work and Pensions Select Committee inquiry on support for carers.

Carers UK welcomes the Work and Pensions Select Committee inquiry on support for carers. With 2.3 million UK adults having given up work to care at some point in their lives and almost 3 million reducing their working hours[i], Carers UK calls on the Government to take action to address the low retention of carers in the workplace and the resulting cost to employers, losing skilled staff who are often at the peak of their careers, as well as the long-term financial implications for families.

Carers UK’s evidence calls for the Government to improve access to the labour market for carers who have been out of the workplace for prolonged periods of time, and demonstrates how sustainably funded health and care services would help working carers to balance their work and caring responsibilities.

Carers UK’s submission recommends that the Government introduces a new statutory right to paid care leave of between at least 5 to10 days for carers in work and recommends that Government acts to make every workplace carer friendly. Carers UK calls on the Government to introduce a day one right to request flexible working for employees and to encourage more jobs to be advertised as flexible, actively welcoming carers.
