Carer awareness

This half day course is aimed at participants who work in the Health and Social Care sector.

Trainer: Beth Evans/Keith Bowen
Audience: Professionals
Timings: 3.5 hours (am or pm)

Staff who attend the course will gain the knowledge and understanding to enable them to identify and support carers.

It will enable an organisation to meet their statutory requirements under the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014. It will also provide the foundation for knowledge and understanding of the enhanced role for carers planned for the future.

The course is delivered in a workshop format to encourage a high level of interaction and discussion of the issues and challenges for practitioners and carers. A case study is presented in the form of a person who is, or has recently been a carer describing their life experiences as a carer, followed by questions from the participants.

At the end of the course the participants will:

  • be aware of the impact of the caring role; how carers contribute to the Health and Social care system and will be able to recognise the benefits of working in partnership with the carer
  • have a clear understanding of what a carer is and about the caring role
  • have gained knowledge of what support and information carers need to carry out their role
  • know what staff can do to identify, give information to and involve carers in decision-making
  • know where carers can receive further support, information and guidance
  • have a basic knowledge of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014

Each participant receives a substantial information pack. Follow up contact with Carers Wales from participants is encouraged to support their future work with carers.

 Feedback from carers

Excellently facilitated, informative and thought-provoking. The case study was particularly poignant, moving and an excellent way of raising awareness and understanding.

Today was very useful. Had no knowledge of the support and services out there for carers before the session. The case study talk was a real eye opener and very useful in realising the difficulties people face and how we can help.

Extremely informative and has increased my understanding of how I can tailor my projects to meet carer/young carer needs/ objectives.
