Housing Benefit - 'Bedroom tax' research summary

30 July 2013

Between June and July 2013, Carers UK conducted 101 interviews with carers affected by the changes to Housing Benefit size criteria for social housing tenants, known as both the 'bedroom tax' and the 'spare room subsidy'.

We found that fewer than 10% had received discretionary housing payments for a full year to cover their shortfall in rent, many of those having to pay the shortfall were struggling to do so - with some facing food poverty, debt, rent arrears and the threat of eviction.
