Caring and emergencies

Carers often tell us that they worry about what would happen to the person they care for if they are in an accident or incapacitated.

In response to this, Carers Scotland has developed a new card for carers. Should an emergency or accident happen, this card lets emergency workers and others know that someone relies on you as a carer and provides spaces for emergency contacts, for example, a friend or family member who can help take over caring.

The card is available to download below (this can be printed off double side and will provide additional copies for fellow carers). We also have limited printed copies available from the Carers Scotland office.

In case of emergency (ICE) is a campaigned conceived by a paramedic in 2005 to encourage people to enter emergency contacts into their mobile phone address book. This can be particularly important for carers.

Simply store the word ICE in your mobile phone address book and against it enter the number of the person you want to be contacted "in case of an emergency".

In an emergency situation, ambulance, police and hospital staff will thenm be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. This can help contact people who can support you in your caring role if you are incapacitated e.g. a friend or relative. You can list multiple emergency contacts as ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

ICE cannot be used if your telephone is locked with a password. For security purposes many mobile phone owners now lock their mobiles, requiring a passcode to be entered in order to access the device. This means that emergency services cannot access the ICE phone entry list.

In response to this problem many device manufacturers have provided a mechanism to specify some text to be displayed whilst the phone is in a locked state. The owner of the phone can specify their ICE contact.

Check your instruction manual or contact your phone company for further advice.
