Safeguarding vulnerable adults

(***UPDATED***)

  • Level: Intermediate
  • Trainer: Jean Gould
  • CPD points: 5 hours

Safeguarding is in a state of flux. This new course will examine the legal framework for the safeguarding of potentially vulnerable adults in social care. Developments since the introduction of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 have increased awareness of safeguarding issues, while the personalisation agenda encourages a less risk-averse approach to support planning. No Secrets has been under review for some time and new guidance is expected. This leaves professionals, service users  and carers in some uncertainty as to what legal rights and powers exist and how to balance risk management and autonomy.

Aims

  • To facilitate an understanding of the law underpinning decisions concerning risk management and safeguarding
  • To explain the different issues that arise depending on mental capacity
  • To discuss how to balance  conflicts between autonomy, empowerment and safety.

Includes

  • An overview of relevant criminal  law
  • Relevant human rights issues, including deprivation of liberty
  • Mental capacity and risk management, including the role of the Court of Protection
  • Current guidance
  • Personalisation and safeguarding, including support planning
  • Direct payments and safeguarding.
