Carers & Advocacy

The aim of this course is to provide participants with an understanding of the role advocacy can play in supporting unpaid carers. Advocacy can help service users make clear their own views and wishes; express and present their views effectively and faithfully; obtain independent advice and accurate information; negotiate and resolve conflict.

Trainer: Rhona Spowart, Independent Carers Advocacy Services Perth

Dates: Dates in 2012 coming soon

Duration: One full day

Suitable for: Social workers, care managers, advisers, carers’ workers, health service staff, voluntary sector workers and occupational
therapists.

Learning Outcomes:

Advocacy is about enabling people to say what they want, obtaining their rights and gaining the services that they need. Unpaid carers are entitled to be in control of their lives but sometimes, they may find themselves in a position where their ability to exercise choice or represent their own interests is limited. In these circumstances an advocate can help to make sure that the persons views are heard, respected and acted upon.

Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the purpose of advocacy.
  • Demonstrate the key principles of advocacy as applied to unpaid carers.
  • Determine and design a code of practice for advocates working with and for unpaid carers.
  • Understand the different advocacy models.
  • Understand other forms of carer support.
  • Locate appropriate advocacy services for unpaid carers
