Self Directed Support

Personalisation is a huge agenda and with new legislation on self directed support currently going throught the Scottish Parliament, this course provides an opportunity to understand the opportunities offered by direct payments and individual service funds (Self Directed Support). It will scope the history, legislation, regulations and guidance viewing its profile in Scotland.

Suitable for: Social workers and care managers, health service staff and voluntary sector workers.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the origin and scope of Self Directed Support (SDS).
  • Identify the primary legislation which underpins its delivery.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the range of options available within SDS.
  • Show an understanding of Direct Payments, and in a social casework context.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of current resource allocation processes across Scotland.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of protection and empowerment within SDS.
  • Understand how SDS packages can be accessed and supported on a basis of public accountability.
  • Acquire knowledge of possible future developments, including the current draft SDS Bill, and the option of the Pre Loaded Purchase Card.

advocacy can play in supporting unpaid carers. Advocacy can help service users make
clear their own views and wishes; express and present their views effectively and
faithfully; obtain independent advice and accurate information; negotiate and resolve
conflict.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course participants will be able to:
1. Understand the purpose of advocacy
2. Demonstrate the key principles of advocacy as applied to unpaid carers
3. Determine and design a code of practice for advocates working with and for
unpaid carers
4. Understand the different advocacy models
5. Understand other forms of carer support
6. Locate appropriate advocacy services for unpaid carers
