Consultation Response

Bill of Rights response

10 December 2010

Carers Northern Ireland supports a strong and inclusive Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland. We are disappointed by the proposals in the current NIO consultation document. We are concerned that the current proposals for a Bill of Rights will not adequately protect the human rights of carers, particularly where those rights conflict with the needs and desires of the person that they care for, or with the interests of the state.

We strongly urge the government to return to the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission's recommendations, presented on 10th December 2008, and use these as a starting point for what should be included in a Bill of Rights.
