The Carers Strategies (Wales) Measure 2010 was passed by the National Assembly for Wales on 22 September 2010 and received Royal Assent on 10 November 2010. The Carers Strategies (Wales) Regulations 2011 were approved by the National Assembly for Wales on 6 December 2011. On the 21st September, the official launch took place of the Carmarthenshire Carers Forum.  The forum will provide carers with the opportunity to have their voices heard and raise issues that affect them to help inform policy in Carmarthenshire.  Pat McCarthy has worked closely with Joanne Silverthorne from the Carmarthenshire Carers Project to help establish the forum. More than 75% of unpaid carers in Wales are worried about cuts to services, according to new research for Carers Week 2011 (13-19 June). Almost half don’t know how they will cope as the axe falls on some of the vital support they rely on.

Rhodri Morgan, the First Minister has announced that a new law for carers will be part of the Welsh Assembly Government's legislative programme for the coming year. This marks a major success in the campaign by Carers Wales to improve the support available for carers
Carers Wales has fought for free home care for many years and has been part of the Coalition on Charging Cymru, (COCC) a consortium of voluntary organisations representing the interests of older people, disabled people and carers.
