Carers UK Responds to News That 900 Social Care Workers Leave the Profession Every Day

11 April 2017

Responding to research by the BBC today that an equivalent of 928 adult social care workers left their jobs every day between 2015 and 2016 and that the industry has a staff turnover rate of 27%, twice the average for other professions in the UK, Emily Holzhausen OBE, Director of Policy at Carers UK said:

Today’s report that so many adult social care workers are leaving the profession demonstrates the increasing pressure that the social care system is under. Social care is vital for unpaid carers – families and friends who provide care - and who rely on good quality and consistent support for their older or disabled relatives. As well as providing essential support for the person needing care, the social care workforce provides vital breaks, reassurance and support helping to protect carers’ own health and well-being.

The reports today are another strong indication that social care remains under critical pressure and underlines the real need for additional and ongoing financial support and a long term sustainable funding settlement for social care. The Government has pledged a Green Paper on the future funding of long term care and a cross-Government Carers Strategy is due to be published this Spring. Both must address issues for families in the short and longer term to improve the lives of carers.
