Carers UK is seeking consultants for an external evaluation of the Volunteer Programme

17 February 2015

Carers UK has been funded by Nesta’s Centre for Social Action Innovation Fund to establish a new, integrated country-wide social action programme to enable carers to support carers across England. An estimated 6.5 million people look after a loved one who is ill, older or disabled. These carers save the UK public purse an estimated £119 billion each year,1 but often only reach out for support when they reach a crisis.

At the moment, the stress of caring often damages people’s relationships and negatively impacts on their employment, finances and mental/physical health. This leads to a breakdown in a carer being able to offer support, and has a significant impact on both the carer and the person they support.

Carers UK has made a commitment to connect carers with others as a way to improve the support and sense of community for all carers throughout the UK. We want to achieve this through the integration of our volunteer programme and by adding new opportunities for people to further the carers movement across the UK.

At present, we have a dedicated team of volunteers working across the UK to improve services, support carers, campaign and raise awareness of caring. During our 50th Anniversary year, we’re aiming to inspire a team of 500 volunteers to help us reach, identify and support more carers than ever before.

As part of our commitment to accountability and learning, Carers UK is seeking an evaluation consultant/team with strong experience of impact evaluation, the volunteer sector and social care and/or similar beneficiary groups to lead an evaluation of our core volunteer services delivered over the two-year period: 2014-2016. The purpose of this evaluation is to enhance understanding of the value of our volunteer services to carers and contribute to internal learning to help us improve our monitoring and evaluation practices.
