Erica Marks

Erica gave up her career to care for son who has severe quadraplegic cerebral palsy and needs 24 hour care.

Who do you care for and how long have you been caring?

I have been caring for my son for last 20 years.

Why do they need care?

He has severe quadraplegic cerebral palsy and needs 24 hour care.

Describe your caring experience in 3 words...

Challenging, lonely, rewarding.

How has your life changed since you became a carer?

I have had to give up my career, become a full time carer, cope with the demands of our other children and essentially put my needs last. I am the fail-safe for our son. My knowledge and experience has often kept him alive, pushed him forwards and enabled him.

What's the most important thing caring has taught you?

Patience! And that however much I give, I receive many times that in return.

What advice would you give to other carers?

Get connected with others in your situation. Information is power, but you are the expert for your child. Look to delegate as much as you can, work with teams to create the best outcome for the person you care for and make time for yourself.

What do you want to see changed for carers?

I want the people they care for to have the right services to meet their needs, so that carers can get some of their life back!
