Getting care and support

No one person can do it all. At some point you will probably need to find someone else to help with caring. Finding the right kind of replacement care is important for the person you look after and for your own peace of mind.

There are many options and many depend on your resources

  • Asking family and friends to help out on a paid or unpaid basis
  • Employing someone
  • Hiring a care worker from a care agency
  • Arranging time in a care home so you can have a rest (respite care)
  • Getting support from your local council or trust, such as a day centre and respite, and offering cash so you can employ your own care.

If you are seeking help from a council and trust, it can vary enormously depending on where you live. It is also important to note that the law on care is different in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Where this might be an issue we will point it out.
