The national carer organisations submitted a joint statement on the Social Care (Self Directed Support) (Scotland) Bill at Stage 1.  The statement outlines our collective welcome to the Bill and areas where it could be strengtened to better recognise and support carers.

The national carer organisations are the following organisations:Carers Scotland, Coalition of Carers in Scotland, Crossroads Caring Scotland, MECOPP, The Princess Royal Trust for Carers in Scotland (part of Carers Trust), Scottish Young Carers Services Alliance and Shared Care Scotland.

We believe we can deliver more for carers by working together to share our knowledge and experience, and by focusing our collective efforts on achieving improvements in areas of policy and practice that are of greatest concern to carers. It is our shared vision that all Scotland’s unpaid carers will feel valued, included and supported as equal partners in the provision of care.

On 17 October 2011, the Scottish Government announced a review of NHS pharmaceutical care to patients in the community across Scotland.

The Scottish Government wants the review to be wide-ranging to enhance the role of pharmacists and encourage closer working with GPs and other community based services, including the third sector. It will examine the pharmaceutical needs of patients and the NHS and the arrangements for providing NHS Pharmaceutical Care Services across Scotland in order to ensure that they are fit for the future of healthcare in Scotland.

Central to the review is how NHS pharmaceutical care can best contribute to the ambitions set out in the Healthcare Quality Strategy for Scotland  - care that is person-centred, safe and effective every time.

A survey for carers, people with long term conditions and third sector organisations to make their views known about the Review of NHS Pharmaceutical Care of Patients in the Community is now available.

Carers Scotland would urge carers to take part and make their views known.

Closing date - 1 June 2012.
