I don't suppose you can help me but I just thought I'd tell you this. My daughter is 12 and up to now she's been in pull up nappies so when I took on the carer of her Toilet training was top priority. In 3 months I've got her doing her wees on the toilet but shes not asking to go she just wait for a cue to go from me. She has pecs cards and has used them and even though she is non-verbal she can say toilet. I suppose it's early days and I should be pashent. Number 2's are different she will do them in her pants (yes I've got her whering pants) If I catch her while in the proses of doing it and put her on the toilet she will finish on the toilet but again will not ask to go. The funny thing is she will do the No2 in her pants while holding the wee I don't know how she can do that with no puddles on the floor thank goodness.
It would be nice to crack this before I get her in to School, Wish me luck!

Try the NAS website for information sheets of toiletting or even OASIS they do fact sheets for most things.
It took us a long time to achieve fully toilet trained and even now we will have accidents that aren't really accidents in the normal way as he knows what is going on.

Thanks for the input but I think we have cracked it !!
The puddles stopped about a month ago after putting her on the toilet every 2 hours with getting her to ask first. The last couple of days she has asked herself and gone herself even once with the number 2's so I am holding my breath but I am claiming success.
Also today she has asked for some fruit without provication so now I am super happy!!

That is really good news, maybe consider you have cracked it because I do and my son still has the odd regression that can mean much icky cleaning up.
Great news about the fruit also, how did you manage that?

Hi Vicky,
About the fruit I didn't manage it she did not by saying it by pointing at it and yesterday she totally stunned me by 1 prompting me to get she usual midday meal ready like a pick-nick by pointing at each item to put on the plate and then took it outside in the garden and eat it out there. Afterwards she came in and nicked half of my beacon sandwich.
I am still getting regressions with the toileting No 2s only but in general 95% success. Today I have the speech theropist comeing here as i still haven't got her it to school yet. She is saying around 12 different words on a daily basis now. she serprises me most days with her progress so started making a log I'm up to 2 pages not a bad list in 5 months.

Wow, you are making amazing progress!
My son is non verbal and 12 years old, what are you doing with your daughter to bring about speech? Are her words clear? My other son gained speech spontaneosly [sp] just before his 5th birthday but I have never heard of anyone gaining it after age 6-8 without some kind of intervention ie ABA.

ABA??
I looked at her mothers log before I gave it back and all i could see she was saying was "Ta" spontaneously the other word were echolalic if you know what i mean. Now she is in an calmer environment with her own choices I could see she wanted to speak rather than use Pecs card and she is getting more confident in using them. ever thought some of the word are not right I know she is trying. Now Speech thoropy is getting involved as well I am a lot happier and looking forward to working with them.

Look it up Paul, yes, but unless you are of independent wealth forget any idea that the authorities will fund the only intervention out there with any scientific proof behind it.

Hi Vicky
my eldest son started to speak about 30 months, and was fluent quite quickly but my younger son was non-verbal for years. I used Pecs with him and I believe that's what helped him to speak - the Pecs system took away the frustration for my son - he realised he had a way of communicating his desires/needs that got him instant results. It gave him the time and space to hear and learn the words I was using in association with his Pecs pictures. Once he wasn't stressed about communication he started to talk withing a year of starting on the Pecs system and had 50+ words within about six months. He's 13 now and you'd never know he had once had no speech.
Also know a lovely lad who started to talk at 9 years of age - had a vocabulary of 250+ words after 12 months on Pecs. His mum is overjoyed

Yes, we are in an on running argument with the school over PECS as they will not do it, we have tried at home but there is no consistency with everyone who works with him.
PECS UK believe that ABA is the preferred method of delivery when trying to implement PECS but we can't even get them to just do the basics, disgraceful really as it is hardly budget busting in the way of an intervention.
The really sad thing is that all the empirical studies on PECS state that it is a method of communication that CAN be taught to even the most disabled of children and many, many schools are stating on their prospectus that they implement it when in fact they don't, my sons school did and I had to get the NAS involved to check their information which resulted in them removing the claim but sadly not in deciding to deliver it instead.
Just one of many arguments I am embroiled in with schools.
Thanks
Vicky

As I can't get me daughter in to school yet her peadiatrician get the Speech therapy involved at home. They where very keen to get started as my daughter seems like she would rather talk than use Pecs. They wrote a very good report stating every thing they intend to do aand every thing they would do when she gets in to school. Then they went on holiday! so watch this space.
