My first topic: A brief intro to me! :-)

Postby Poppet » Thu Apr 19, 2012 6:39 pm

Hiya all.

I'm newby to the site. I'd just thought I'd introduce myself properly. I'm 32 and I care for my 30 year old brother who uses a wheelchair and is visually impaired, etc. The former has been the case for the last 2 years. We've not received much help and as a result a year ago I had to leave my job to care full time. (Prior to that it was just mum doing it alone.)

I've joined this forum as it'd be nice to chat to other carers for both the social side as well as getting a bit of advice.

Hello Poppet,

Glad you've joined the forum - I hope you find it helpful.

You mentioned you hadn't received much help, so I thought I'd suggest having a look on the help and advice section of our website to see if there's anything you could be getting more support with and information on how to get it: http://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice

We also have an Adviceline (0808 808 7777 adviceline@carersuk.org ) which provides info and advice on things like carers assessments, benefits and services available to carers. It's staffed by experts and they may be able to advise you in how to get more help for you, your brother and mum.

Here on the forum, I'm sure you'll meet lots of friendly people. I'm new to it too, but it's become clear very quickly that it's a wonderful place for carers :D

Best wishes,
Lucy

Hello Poppet,

Welcome to the Forum. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here : :D . Lucky brother to have you caring for him too.

A good introduction. I care for my mum, and combine this with a full-time job - never do enough in either area and constantly feel guilty about it. Forum is a lifeline though - lots of people who understand,

Take care, Anne

Heya all. Thanks for the welcomes again.

Anne- Thanks. I try. lol. I'm sure you do a great job of combining both. It's tricky. I worked full time up until May last year whilst caring but as we got no support I had to leave. It's such a shame really. I enjoyed working and meeting new people. I hope that once (touch wood) some comprehensive support is in place I may be able to go back to the world of work.

Lucy - Welcome to you too. :-) Thank you. Yes, I contacted the advice line recently and they gave me some good ideas which we'll have a think about and look into. All help gratefully received. :-) How are you finding the job so far? Seems like a fab forum.

Robert - Thanks for the welcome too. Yes, I'm ok. Glad it's almost the weekend ... the care doesn't lessen but everything's a bit more chilled at the weekends. Hope you're well.

:-)
