Bookable respite for August

Please can anyone help me.I am new to caring for my very active 93 year old mum and am needing to know how I can book respite care for her for ten days in August.I know we will have to pay but I need to find somewhere like her day centre where she can be kept active and is a bit of a holiday for her.We live on the Wirral so would welcome any ideas in the North west .

Hi Joy and welcome to the forum.

I would suggest starting with your Mum's GP and then moving on to Social Services who will have a list of all the residential Care Homes that offer respite care in your area. There are also a number of good websites that give details of local homes - just google 'care home wirral'. You could also ask the staff at the Day Centre she attends for any suggestions too.

The only problem I had with respite care was actually finding a home that had a vacancy around the time I needed it - in the end I had to change my dates to fit in with the dates they had available !

For a moderately active pensioner, one of the most delightful and suprisingly affordable forms of respite is a cruise - ideally with a companion of the same gender, but this isnt vital. I packed my father in law off to the Med for a fortnight from Greenock, and he loved it. They all have doctors and nurses on board and are used to coping with medical issues, and a cruise is a very sociable way to meet people, plus travel insurance is usually less of an issue. As Scally says, a cruise may be a good idea, if you can afford it. At least that way, you mum will get a vacation as well. hi i was in the same boat as you i went on the internet if you have it and looked at care homes i put in anchor homes and rang them , i made an app and the whole family went to see the place on a sunday my mum came to.

lucky for us they did have places for when we wanted to go away, and they had what was called a bogof offer like the advert buy a week get one free so instead of it costing £988 for two week it only cost £494 for two, i did not even know this happened in care homes.

but as the other person has said visit your doctor or ring the council and see if they know of any recommemded care homes
