How can I get help

Postby Vickie Marr » Tue Feb 28, 2012 2:34 pm

My mum has lived with me and my family for the last 13 years but has never registered with living with us as she still uses her old address,to which my brother is living. She is coming home from hospital today and is changing her GP to mine and will register as living here. I want to know where we can hire a carer to come in and stay when we go on holiday as she is prone to having fits while sleeping and cannot get out since having a bad fall..we would need the same person rather than an agency which would send out a different person and they would have to be with her between the hours of 5pm and 10 am to make her dinner and breakfast and check that she's ok during the night..we do t expect that person to stay awake but to sit with her and keep her company in the evening and to help her in and out of the bath before they leave..no housework etc to be done.. Please advise if anyone can recommend we are in Goffs Oak, East Hertforshire.

Did you know that there are electronic monitoring devices which might help "monitor" your mum at night? I'm not sure exactly how they work, but have read about them in a Carers magazine. It might help everyone caring for mum.

Hello Vickie and welcome :)

I'm pleased to hear your mum is now well enough to return home. That must be a relief. Yes, there are agencies that can provide this type of live in service but they are few and far between. This might be a good starting point http://www.liveincarers.com/live-in-care-agencies.html Or maybe speak to your local Carers' Group to see if they can suggest an agency that will provide this where you live. To find your local group you can use http://www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice ... e-you-live. I guess you are ruling out the option of your mum going into a Home for a short stay to give you a break ?

Its good to have you with us Vickie. If there is any other help or advice you need, feel free to ask us. The General Discussion section is a good place to raise issues. We are a friendly and helpful bunch here, always willing to listen and help if we can.

I hope your mum soon settles back home, and I hope you can make arrangements for a good holiday. Much needed I expect !

Best wishes,

Robert :)
