The life expectancy of people with Down's Syndrome used to be very poor, and there were similar attitudes. But things have changed, and now some people with DS live into their seventies, some have jobs, some live independently. I'm proud of my son, who has travelled independently by bus to college since he was 16 and has been on ski-ing and sailing holidays this year, as well as attending lots of amazing events - Olympic football, two Edinburgh International Film Festival black-tie Gala Premieres, theatre, music and comedy festivals, as well as travelling all over the globe, with visits to Finland, France and Tenerife in the past 12 months alone. Well you name it, he has done it. Actually he has packed more into this last year than most people achieve in a decade. So to me, life is all about quality, not quantity.
"This is one of the hardest lessons for humans to learn. We cannot admit that things might be neither good nor evil, neither cruel nor kind, but simply callous - indifferent to all suffering, lacking all purpose." - Richard Dawkins
