Disgusted

Postby no1mum » Wed Sep 15, 2010 12:30 pm

I'm pretty much at a loss for words after this morning. My step son who has Aspergers developed severe toothache over the weekend, initially we could only get an appt at the dentist for next Monday, kept phoning through for a cancellation and managed to get one for this morning. We explained to the dentist that he has Aspergers and bottom line was that she said he needed two extractions and has referred him elsewhere, the mention of the words Autism and Aspergers freaked her out. I've phoned the clinic he's been referred to and as of a few minutes ago the earliest available appointments they have is for w/c 11 October, in the meantime school won't have him back in attendence until the problem is sorted, he's in severe pain that's not being eased by pain relief and he DOESN'T understand the concept of pain. Have already put in a complaint about the treatment received at the dental surgery.
My partner and myself are both so angry.

We've tried all the avenues we can think of and we're now stressed to the limit because of the effect it's having on my step son, to my mind for him it's mental and physical torture. He needs to be prepared mentally for anything like this.

They don't at our A & E, my partner had a tooth abscess a couple of months ago and the whole of the right hand side of his face and neck had swollen, he went to A & E and they wouldn't see him - not even to prescribe antibiotics, I made him go back the next day and he ended up on 2 lots of antibiotics, very strong ones at that. It's 2 extractions that need doing which they won't do in A & E. We've not stopped phoning around since we got home.

Have managed to sort out painkillers, ibruprofen and co codamol, neither are suitable to be taken for any length of time though. I won't give up I'm pretty good at pestering and making a nuisance of myself when it comes to things like this.

I would ask the British Dental Association (http://www.bda.org/) what you are expected to do in such circumstances - it surely cannot be considered acceptable practise.
