There have been a few enquiries from members asking about the Creative Writing competition. Further info on link below.
http://www.carersuk.org/how-you-can-hel ... ompetition

If you have any questions about the competition, please send an email to writingcomp@carersuk.org

Carers UK receives many submissions every year but not all of them make it into the anthology book.

I will add a few below to give an example of past work by members.

However, just one point - only share those poems/short stories on forum that you will not be submitting for the competition. Anything you want judged can be sent to writingcomp@carersuk.org , and the new comp opens in May. They will then be judged anonymously.

Alone

The voices inside your head
The hidden old you, crying for help
The tears fall down your face
As you sit in silence, hoping for this to be the end.

People who should be saving you
Are blaming you
But you hold on
To the tiny glimpse of hope
That doesn't want to let you go.

He says he's there, when he's not
How can he be so selfish
To leave you all alone
In the darkness, emptiness
Alone.

Hospital Garden

What can meaningfully be said?
It's just a matter of time,
Perhaps a very short time;
There isn't that much can be said.

But we sat by your bed for hours
Just thinking of stuff to say
Though, really, what can one say
To fill those long, difficult hours?

So I walked where the tall trees grow
In the grounds down by the road;
There's comfort there by the road
In the place where the tall trees grow.

I wish that we could take you there,
To the grass dappled in shade,
Where the tall trees cast their shade,
It's so quiet, not noisy, there

Quieter than this clinical space
For life approaching its end,
That which is reaching its end;
No tree could grow tall in this space

I Love you Mum

As a child I had dreams of what my life would be , being one of four children we had squabbles and tears , but I never thought after my dad died the family would split in so many ways.

Mum met my stepdad and was happy with her new life,I think her life was more exciting she did things she had never done with my dad, he was a workaholic , but just like my dad my stepdad died suddenly at home from a heart attack.

After the shock , mum became very quiet and retreated in to a shell , nothing could draw her out , the only person she seem to want was my sister , she was her life from the day she was born, my self and my two brothers always seemed to be on the outside looking in.

As the years passed by my brothers drifted away one we have never found out why he just stopped speaking to mum, my younger brother too , and I watched as my sister just used mum for her money, she lurched from one crisis to another, until she borrowed more money and completely cut mum off.

Its been 6 years now and i've watched mum going down hill very bitter , can't understand why she's not got her family round her,two grandchildren and three great grandchildren she never gets to see, to me my mum will always be a huge part of my life , but I will never be a big part of her life .

I feel very bitter I have been left to care for mum ,I never imagined it would all be down to me, I'm watching my mum fading away and I'm powerless to do anything about it , I can only carry on and do the best I can , ignore all the nasty comments , rude words and hurtful things she says , for you see although I moan and and wish I did not have this burden , my dear mum I love you and will always be there for you , I tell you everyday how much I love but never in words out loud , as these are words you wouldn't want to hear.

The saboteur

Fooling yourself into submission
Some would say is the tradition
for the likes of a caregiver.
likened to some sort of slave
To play the mandolin
and plucked to the lowest rank
According to 'the think tank'
Of brass monkeys
who know nothing about violins
or even how to play them.
And 'The Fat Cat's' continued to 'purr'
and confer what to do?
With the saboteur.
No Tomfoolery.

No Tomfoolery,
Life is too serious to some,
No fun in life what will you become?
Conclusory,

Open your eyes,
Fly away to the 'Lily of the Isle',
Do it in style and at a pace,
prioritize,

On duty when life is serious,
Caring yes?
But no fun in life what will you become?
Weariness.

One to avoid,
Life becoming a drag
Do it in style at a pace,
Polaroid.

Continue...If you like people I'd love to see what you come up with...go for it :D

You weren't there...

Did you care to help?
Or did you think of only one's self?
Still, you shot off your 'North 'n' South,
You have a 'razor jaw' that's for certain,
Anyone would think it was your burden,

How can you say when you don't know?
You weren't there...False Amigo.
Too slow to know the facts of the matter,
Still, your chin goes 'Chitter Chatter',

Not that it causes any strife
I'm afraid you have to live that for Life,
It's called your 'Conscience'
But in your case.....It is....
A hundred and one truncheons.
For Life....

Loving reading your poems Charm, keep them coming. Hopefully others will join in too.

However, just one point - only share those poems/short stories on forum that you will not be submitting for the competition. Anything you want judged can be sent to writingcomp@carersuk.org , and the new comp opens end of this month. They will then be judged anonymously.
