Stoke-on-Trent councillors call for study on 'human impact' of welfare reform

Discuss news stories and political issues that affect carers.
Councillors are calling for the full impact of welfare reform on Stoke-on-Trent families to be exposed for the first time.

Scrutiny committee members say previous reports have only scratched the surface of the issue by focusing on individual benefit changes.

Tens of thousands of people in Stoke-on-Trent have been affected by recent developments such as the bedroom tax, benefit cap and the introduction of Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payments.

Couple of clients over there .. one Stoke , the other Port Vale .. both saying virtually the same thing.

Not very " Nice " in any of the towns that make up the city.

Given my scant knowledge of that part of the world , that is saying something !

One thing in common ... potteries / mining ... heart ripped out and not replaced !!!

And , they are not talking about football either !
Just to confirm an earlier rumour from one of my clients a few week back :

Tensions now bubbling over to the streets.

Not carer related , more of a problem across the 1 in 4 as a group.

Several issues ... interlocking ( That word again ! ) ... a few spill over directly into both CarerLand and CareeLand.

Not a nice situation at all.

No excuses but ... it has been simmering ... and it started at street level.

Does ask the bigger question ...

Derelict houses in Stoke-On-Trent up for sale for £1

Why does it take instances like this before the Authorities sit up and take note let alone action other than to punish the perpetrators ?

In that respect , said Authorities might look in the mirror first.

How many other " Stokes " are there simmering away ... with every prospect of economic uncertainty , allied with further austerity measures , to come ?

In social terms , an Armaggedon caused primarily by Government inaction.

The number of casualties is rising ... 13 million + at the last count.

( Joseph Rowntree Foundation )
A little more following an anti austerity march today.

From the Stoke Sentinel local newspaper :

"Mohammed Pervez, leader of the Labour group on Stoke-on-Trent City Council, joined the campaigners on their march through the Potteries.

He said: “Austerity is a silent cancer that needs to be wiped out.

“People are losing hundreds of pounds from their pay or do not have jobs or being forced to work low pay jobs.

“We see cuts to social services and the NHS and rising homelessness and the current government are in denial about it.

“This group are marching from Birmingham to Liverpool to stand up against austerity measures from the government."

######################################################################

Sue Kent, a social worker who trained at Keele and has worked in the city for 25 years, is among those taking part in the march.

She said: “We are seeing the closures of Sure Start centres and children's centres and seeing an increase in people attending food banks these are austerity measures we are seeing across Stoke-on-Trent.

“We are walking from Birmingham to Liverpool to our annual general meeting on Wednesday and some people are walking with us every day..

Interesting article on today's BBC website , dovetails into this thread :

General election 2017: Will Brexit fire up Stoke's dwindling electorate ?

Kevin Jones was a third generation Royal Doulton worker until he was made redundant when the china maker closed its last UK factory more than a decade ago.

He now runs Oatie Mostons in Market Square, selling Staffordshire oatcakes from his van.

"I haven't voted for a few year," he says. "After I was made redundant I became very disillusioned with things.

They say the same things over and over but nothing ever changes."

Apathy / disillusionment ... two words that are mirror imaged in too many manors in today's Sad New World.

No political party touches more than the surface of current problems most of us experience in the outside world let alone CaerLand and CareeLand.
