Queen's Speech 2016: what it means for carers

18 May 2016

Each year the Queen opens a new session of Parliament with a speech setting out the Government’s legislative plans for the forthcoming session.

The 2016 speech sets out 20 pieces of legislation for 2016-17. Key themes for upcoming legislation include improving life chances, strengthening public finances and increasing national security.

Alongside bills on infrastructure, education, prison reform, transport and pensions the Government plans to legislate to bring forward a new Bill of Rights and a Children and Social Work Bill which aims to speed up the process for adoption while improving children’s social care provision.

This briefing summarises what the most relevant pieces of legislation would mean for carers.
