Carers UK Submission to 2017 Budget Consultation

22 September 2017

Together with the long overdue publication of the cross-Government Carers Strategy the Budget must provide the means to provide this a much overdue increase in support for unpaid carers. This submission provides evidence and recommendations covering:

  • Full employment and productivity
  • Improving the productivity and efficiency of the NHS and social care by supporting sustainable caring roles
  • Supporting the sustainability of unpaid care through Social Security
  • The role of technology in supporting the sustainability of caring roles

The different, often more complex needs of a society living longer with multiple long-term health conditions has meant that more than ever we rely on families and friends often caring in conjunction with more formal services. In order to redress the impact of underspending on social care and cuts to social security which have placed an enormous strain on families and threaten the sustainability of caring relationships, this Budget needs to urgently address spending in a number of areas, principally care and support services and social security.
