Main Content: Carers quiz politicians at National Carers Summit
On Thursday 12th November carers from all over the country attended Carers UK's National Carers Summit in London.
During the morning session an expert panel was chaired by Imelda Redmond, Chief Executive of Carers UK. The panel included Terry Rooney MP, Chair of the Work and Pensions Select Committee, Trevor Phillips, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Alexandra Norrish from the Department of Health and Jean Gould a leading community care solicitor. They answered questions from the audience about the future for carers. Questions covered a wide range of subjects from the current level of carers' benefits to the future of social care.
In the afternoon session GMTV journalist John Stapleton chaired a "Question Time" style session where carers quizzed representatives from the three main political parties on what they will do for carers after the next General Election.
Top of the carers' agenda was action on carer benefits. They also wanted to know why some PCTs had not spent their allocation of the £150 million earmarked for carers' breaks and what a future government will do about it.
The panel included Helen Goodman MP, Labour, Maria Miller MP, Conservatives, and Paul Burstow MP, Liberal Democrats.
A full report on the Summit will follow.
