Main Content: Carers now a priority for swine flu vaccination

Carers UK welcomes the decision from Gillian Merron MP, Public Health Minister to make carers a priority for vaccination against H1N1 swine flu in England.

In the letter received by Carers UK she states, "household contacts of immuno-compromised individuals (i.e. people and carers living in close contact with individuals whose immune systems may be compromised due to disease, or treatment such as chemotherapy)" will be the first to be vaccinated with the H1N1 swine flu vaccine".

Whilst this will not benefit people caring for disabled people who are not immuno-compromised e.g. an adult with a learning disability and no other health needs, but it is an important step forward. Prior to this carers had expressed anger that professional careworkers were to be offered the vaccine but not carers who are family or friends.
