Lottery Award to help carers

15 January 2008

Carers UK has been awarded a five-year grant of £488,434 to help support CarersLine – it’s free information helpline for carers. The award was made by the Big Lottery Fund through its’ Advice Plus Programme.

CarersLine provides carers with advice and information on a whole range of issues that affect their lives. Not only does it offer telephone support but the service also publishes a range of booklets and factsheets. Information is also made available to carers 24/7 via Carers UK’s website.

The new grant will ensure that Carers UK can continue to help carers to claim benefits, access local health services and find their local carers’ support services. Last year Carers UK dealt with over 20,000 queries from carers. One carer was Mr. Bergman who Carers UK helped claim back £6,000 in council tax discount which his council had wrongly stated he couldn’t get. On average each carer who calls CarersLine is £25 a week better off as a result of our expert advice.

We are very grateful to the Big Lottery for making this grant possible.
