Carers UK at Labour Party Conference

01 October 2007

Can we meet the costs of long term care? Carers UK took part in a 'fringe' event debate organised by the Caring Choices coalition about the future shape of the social care system.

Imelda Redmond, Chief Executive of Carers UK, called for carers to be at the heart of a modernised social care system. She warned that as carers save the UK £87 billion each year, it would only take a small number of people to decide not to provide care to have a significant impact on social care expenditure. A new system must take into account self-funders, who currently are outside of the social care system.

Further details of Carers UK's activities at the party conferences will be added soon, but in the meantime, here is a podcast of the Carers UK's Caring Choices fringe event: can we meet the costs of long term care?
