Carers UK today welcomed the new review of social care published by the Kings Fund which called for sharp increases in funding of social care and an overhaul of the current means-testing funding system.
Imelda Redmond said, "Sir Derek Wanless and his team have done an excellent job at looking at the crisis in funding social care both now and in the future. We hear every day and every hour just how carers i.e. family members and friends looking after elderly and chronically sick and disabled people, are struggling without sufficient support. They find the system complicated, full of different messages about care - things they have been promised but find it hard to get, shock about paying for care, etc.
She added, "What the report does is make it clear how vital carers' input really is to the care equation. There is a strong economic imperative to ensure that carers are supported within the caring partnership. The number of carers will need to rise by 3 million to a staggering 9 million by 2037, unless there is greater service provision - having implications for individuals, but also the economy if they are unable to provide this care.
