Carers in Dudley took part in our 'Carers Voices' training to help carers improve their campaigning and hone their communication and presentation skills to influence local decision-makers. They've already had an impact and their campaigning has led to extra services for local carers.
Carers in Dudley wanted help “to get their voices heard in campaigning” as one carer put it. The group which included BME carers supported by a translator, took part in a two day training session to help them get their message across to professionals, make presentations at meetings, as well as learn tips and strategies to make their voice stand out.
Carers put their new influencing skills to immediate effect - following the course they told us about a ‘quick win’. Asian carers attending the course raised the need on religious grounds for women only sessions at their local swimming pool. Other women highlighted this as a preference and following the course they joined together and lobbied the Council to introduce more women-only sessions. The Council have taken up their request and are now trying to find a convenient pool for women only sessions.
Carers Voices Training is FREE for carers groups. Information about the course and how to book - more...
Carer Debbie Bills reflected on how the training helped her in her role as an Expert Carer on the local Mental Health Board. "It gave me new skills on how to present ideas and concerns to health professionals. I’ll feel more confident when I deliver carers’ information."
Christine Rowley, Carers Lead for Dudley Council: “Many carers here already make their voices heard but there are others who could and would do more with a little more support. I hope that having had the 'independent' input they will have gained in confidence."
