Every Disabled Child Matters campaign win on short breaks

20 March 2008

The Every Disabled Child Matters Campaign has won a major breakthrough in its campaign to give all families of disabled children the right to a break - local authorities will now be under a duty to provide short breaks.

Carers UK congratulates the Every Disabled Child Matters campaign in securing new legal duties on local authorities  to help parents caring for disabled children by giving them breaks from their caring responsibilities.

The House of Lords has amended the Children and Young Persons Bill to create a new duty on local authorities to help parents caring for disabled children by giving them breaks from their caring responsibilities.

Short breaks provide an essential opportunity for carers to recharge their batteries, and give disabled children and young people additional opportunities to access positive activities independently of their families.
