Could you tell your story to the press? Carers UK needs carers to come forward and talk to the media about what its like to be a carer, how you've raised awareness of carers rights, and other campaigning success.
Carers UK uses carers real stories to highlight our campaigns in the media.
When carers are interviewed in the media they show the public what its really like to be a carer. This helps other carers identify themselves as carers, and seek help and support. They can inspire other carers to come forward and campaign - this is what Equal Partners is about.
Jill Pay is carer in London who is taking part in Equal Partners. Jill helped launch the New Deal for Carers recently by doing a national television interview with Gordon Brown. The announcement will invest an extra £33 million in carers services.
"This was the first time I've done any media work - I feel very strongly that carers should be given a higher profile, and this means working with the media. When carers speak up, we can really can make a difference."
YES! Talking to the media can be quite daunting, especially the first time but its also very rewarding. Lynda Wisbach, a carer in Newcastle, was the face of our Back Me Up Campaign in 2005 and has done lots of press and television interviews since then. "The first time I was interviewed I was so nervous. But it was incredible, I felt empowered!"
"My advice to other carers thinking about being a media case study- take a deep breath and just go for it! You won't regret it. There are not enough carers in the media, by speaking up you'll get people talking about and appreciating what its like to be a carer. You'll help get recognition for carers."
Carers UK will help and support you. We'll give you all the information you need and help you decide which sorts of media you are involved with, so that you're in control.
