Meet David from Aberdeen

16 February 2007

David, from Aberdeen, carers for his mother. Two years ago she was left in hospital with no-one to care for her. David had to fight social services for the right to care for her at home, and after a year, won his battle. He tells his story.

"Two years ago I campaigned and fought hard in my local Authority area (Aberdeen) for about a year, for the right to care for my mum at home. Due to the absolute incompetance of Social Services she was left in hospital for ages with no where to go.....This was a horrendous experience. When i won the argument and chose to care for her, the council awarded me with £6,000 backdated money under the Direct Payments scheme. Now my mum is fine being at home, yet all i got was hassle and stress - we need to reduce the burden of unecessary bureacracy and red tape for carers.

I've used every possible opportunity to visit Parliaments and point out to politicians how difficult the system is.  I'm a very out spoken person - I say what I feel, thats the way it should be, in my opinion."
